Memories of Des

DESMOND ARTHUR RANGER 13.11.1931 – 12.01.2014 I first met Des when we were pupils at the same school at the age of 11. Our paths went different ways and we never met again until 56 years later and this was a co-incidence when we were both visiting Wisley Gardens and he recognized me. We went on several outing and holidays together and Des quickly joined in with my interests in Organ and Keyboard Club Meetings and playing Bowls. He turned out to be a very good player and was a welcome addition to any team. Wherever Des was, you can be sure there were people for him to talk to. He loved meeting people and amusing them with any anecdotes. It was a joy to see him in action and many people at the shops would hear him either singing or whistling on his way and knew that he too, was happy. He was an interesting man and a welcome member at quizzes because his memory was fantastic for statistics and details. He could sing many tunes but you needed to hear his words when he had forgotten the famous lines, he was so clever at speedy improvisation. He was a very caring man and together we were able to help each other to still enjoy our lives as we grew older. I miss him tremendously. He was so proud of his three sons, Michael, Stephen and Christopher, their wives Maria, Isabelle and Jane and his two beautiful granddaughters Jennifer and Annalie and, for myself, I too enjoy the company of all of them just as Des enjoyed my family. He was so good with my handicapped daughter also and she will sorely miss him. May he rest in peace. Olive
